Home elevators in Carlsbad

Keep every floor of your Carlsbad home within reach.

A home elevator lets you keep your whole house, and the years you plan to spend in it.

Think about the trips you make on your stairs each day. Laundry goes up, groceries come in, and the bedroom sits a floor away from the kitchen. When knees ache or a partner is healing from surgery, those trips start to shape your day. A home elevator in your Carlsbad home turns them back into a short, easy ride.

Most homes in Carlsbad are single-family houses, and most are owned by the families who live in them. That is where an elevator pays off best. You are not adapting a rental for someone else. You are making your own home work for the next stage of your life, whether that means aging in place or bringing a parent home to live with you.

A PVE elevator suits these homes because it asks so little of them. It is self-supporting, so it stands on a level floor you already have. In standard installations there is no pit to dig, no hoistway to frame and no machine room to find space for. Your rooms stay your rooms, and the work stays small.

How it works

The cleanest home elevator on the market.

California utilities sometimes cut power ahead of windstorms. If the power fails while you ride, the cab descends to the lowest level at safety speed and the door unlocks, so nobody waits upstairs in the dark.

  1. 01Air lifts you up

A vacuum pump at the top of the unit changes the air pressure and the cab rises.

  2. 02Gravity brings you down

Air is let back in and the cab descends. No oils, hydraulic fluid or lubricants.

  3. 03Runs on household current

Low power draw, so it works alongside the solar arrays many homes now have.

The most sustainable home elevator available. Anywhere.

Models

Four models. One for every home.

If your stairs are tight and the elevator is mainly for you, the compact PVE30 carries one rider. Couples who want to ride together often choose the PVE37 or the square Cube, which suits two- and three-story homes. If someone in your family uses a wheelchair, start with the PVE52, the model PVE markets as wheelchair accessible.

Why homeowners choose PVE

Safe, simple and made to be seen.

Here is what a PVE elevator brings to a Carlsbad home, and why it fits the houses and families here.

No pit, less work

The elevator is self-supporting and rests on a level floor you already have. In standard installations you skip the pit, the hoistway and the machine room. That keeps the work in your Carlsbad home small and keeps your permit simpler too.

Safe descent in a shutoff

California utilities cut power ahead of windstorms. If the power fails while you ride, the cab descends to the lowest level at safety speed and the door unlocks. You are never left waiting between floors.

Room to age in place

Carlsbad has more seniors than the national average. An elevator lets you keep using every floor of your house as the years go by, so you can stay in the home and the neighborhood you know.

A short install

After site preparation, most installs take 2 to 3 days. Your daily routine is only briefly disturbed, and you can start riding soon after the final city inspection.

A panoramic view

The round, see-through design gives you 360 degree visibility as you ride. The aluminum frame and polycarbonate panels let light pass through, so the elevator feels open in your living space.

Assembled in the USA

PVE has designed and manufactured air-driven home elevators since 2002. Each one is assembled and factory-tested in Miami, Florida, and installed by a dealer trained at the PVE Miami facility.

Testimonials

What homeowners say.

Real words from families who added a PVE elevator to the home they love.

We are not age-limited with the elevator. At any age, it's like living on a single floor. We've been here 5 years and it's never needed anything. The elevator has been flawless.

PVE homeowner5 years with a PVE

My house was built in 1925 and it was hard to get something to fit in with the décor of my home, but the PVE fit in perfectly. I am thrilled with the design, engineering, and reliability of the elevator by PVE.

PVE homeownerHome built in 1925

It turns a 2-story into a ranch concept! It's for the ease & access but also for the resale. I think the investment is worth it!

What happens during installation?

Your installation plan should cover the work before the elevator arrives as well as assembly and testing.

  1. Review the home

Confirm the layout, the people using the elevator and the levels it needs to serve.

  2. Confirm the model and location

Check dimensions, landing access and the requirements for the selected configuration.

  3. Prepare the site

Complete the agreed structural and electrical work and arrange the required permits and inspections.

  4. Install and hand over

Assemble and test the elevator, complete required approvals, and explain operation and ongoing care.

Timing depends on site preparation, the selected model and local requirements.

FAQ

Carlsbad home elevator questions

Have another question? Tell us about your home and a PVE dealer will answer you directly. 813-548-4339
Is there room for an elevator in my Carlsbad house?

In most cases, yes, because a PVE elevator takes up very little floor space. It is self-supporting, so it needs a level floor and an opening through the floor above, not a pit or a separate shaft. Many single-family homes in Carlsbad have a corner, a closet or a spot beside the stairs that works well. Every home is different, so a dealer visit confirms the best place before you order.

Where do I apply for the permit in Carlsbad?

You apply to the City of Carlsbad's Community Development Building Division. Residential projects need a B-1 application form plus supporting documents, and the city will not accept a submittal that is incomplete. If you submit in person, you need an appointment, since walk-ins are not allowed. Your PVE dealer can help you prepare the paperwork so your application is complete the first time.

Does the state of California inspect my elevator too?

No, not for a private single-family home. California's state elevator program does not cover an elevator in a home that is not open to the public. Your project is handled by the City of Carlsbad instead. After the permit is issued, the city carries out the required inspections, and the applicant schedules them. Ask your installer early who will book each one, so nothing slows down your project.

What if the utility shuts off our power during a windstorm?

You will not be stuck. If the power fails while the elevator is running, the cab descends to the lowest level at safety speed and the door unlocks so you can step out. This matters in California, where utilities cut power ahead of windstorms and dry weather, often in the fall. Many families plan around those shutoffs, and this design gives you one less thing to worry about.

My husband uses a wheelchair. Which elevator should we consider?

Start with the PVE52, the only PVE model marketed as wheelchair accessible. It has the widest cabin and door of the range and room for a rider plus a helper. It is not ADA compliant, and not every wheelchair fits, so we suggest you try a PVE52 at an authorized dealer with your own chair. That way you know it works for your family before you order.

Do I need my HOA's approval before I order?

It depends on where the elevator goes. An elevator inside your home is usually a building permit matter. Exterior changes, such as a lift added on the outside of the house, often need HOA approval in addition to the city permit. If you live in a planned community, read your rules or call your HOA first. It is a quick step that keeps your project on schedule.

How soon can we start using it?

The install itself usually takes 2 to 3 days once the site is ready. Before that, the city needs to review and issue your permit, and plan check only starts once fees are paid. After the install, the city inspection follows. Times vary from project to project, so your dealer will give you a realistic plan for your home at the estimate visit.

Who will look after the elevator once it is in?

Your local PVE authorized dealer takes care of service after the install. The elevator is low maintenance and uses no harmful oils or lubricants, but it still needs regular check-ups, at least every 6 months. Your dealer sets up the schedule and is the person to call with any question. Every PVE dealer is trained at the company's Miami facility, so you get support from people who know the product well.

Carlsbad has a larger share of seniors than the country as a whole. Many people here are in their sixties and seventies, and some are well past that. If you are planning to stay in your house for the long run, an elevator is one of the clearest ways to make that plan last. It also helps if a parent may move in with you later.

Most homes here are single-unit houses, and most are owner occupied. For you, that means the decision is usually yours to make. You choose where the elevator goes, often in a corner of a living room, beside the stairs or in a stacked closet. A PVE dealer will look at your floors and suggest the spot that disturbs your home the least.

Your permit comes from the city. Home elevator permits in Carlsbad are issued by the Community Development Building Division. The permit covers the floor openings, the electrical circuit and the inspections that follow. A PVE elevator needs no pit in standard installations, so there is one less item for the city to review.

The city is strict about paperwork, so a careful start saves time. Residential projects need a B-1 application form plus supporting documents, and incomplete submittals are not accepted. In-person submittals need an appointment, since walk-ins are not allowed. Plan check review starts only once fees are paid, and fees are typically based on square footage or the value of the work. Your dealer can help you gather what the city asks for.

After the permit is issued, city inspections follow, and the applicant schedules them. In many cases your installer handles this, but ask so you know who is booking each visit. Good news on the state side: California's elevator program does not cover an elevator in a single-family home that is not open to the public. Your project is handled locally under the California Residential Code, which Carlsbad has adopted with local amendments.

If you live in a planned community, check with your HOA early. An elevator inside your home usually stays a building permit matter. Exterior changes, such as a lift added outside the house, often need HOA approval as well as the permit. Asking before you order keeps your timeline clear.

Power shutoffs are part of life in California, and that matters for anyone who relies on an elevator. Utilities cut power ahead of windstorms and dry weather to guard against wildfires, often in the fall. Outages have also grown longer across the state. A PVE elevator is designed for this: when the power fails mid-ride, the cab descends to the lowest level at safety speed and the door unlocks.

When the power goes out, the cab comes down and the door opens.

Once the permit is in place and the site is ready, the install itself is short. Most PVE elevators go in within 2 to 3 days after site preparation. That means fewer days of workers in your home and a quick return to normal life. The next step is a free visit, where a dealer looks at your floors and gives you a quote.
