A hydraulic elevator rides on a piston driven by a pump that forces fluid into a cylinder beneath the car. The ride is smooth and the weight capacity is the highest of the four types, which is why hydraulic systems are common in large custom homes. The trade-off is space and construction: they need a hoistway, usually a pit below the lowest floor, and a separate machine room for the pump and reservoir. Cable-Driven and Traction Elevators

Cable-driven systems lift the car with steel ropes running over a motorized sheave, balanced by a counterweight in the hoistway.
